He thought that she'd been aiming too shallow and it wouldn't hit if he moved just a little, but he was wrong, and her attack, although with a blunted wooden weapon, was still good enough to slice through his pants and leave a slow bleeding gash along his thigh.  He stepped back and placed a hand on it.  The wound stopped bleeding and closed up within seconds... the pants did not.  "It looks like I'll be giving the tailor more work.  Nice swing, I underestimated your reach.  Remember there is a very large artery in there that if someone doesn't get healed or at least bandaged quickly enough, they will bleed out and die, it was a good area to aim for."  He brought his axe to the table and grabbed a Club.

"Ok, now for the Mace type weapons.  Put that Axe away and grab a two handed wooden Club from the table.  Like the axe, it's heavier at the top and you use it's momentum to carry it into the swing.

Unlike the Axe, it's not a sharp-edged-blade type of weapon.  It is versatile in what it can be, as in, can be spiked all over to pierce through or catch on armor, can have a chain on the end with a heavy ball at the end of that, called a Mourning Star, for increased momentum, can be thin or fat, as long as the end is heavier than the shaft, it is considered a Mace and not a Staff or Polearm, though if it is 3' or longer it is considered a Polearm.  You can still use the handle like the Axe, as a block or jab.

With using the momentum, be careful about rebound and injuring yourself just like the axe... if you swing too hard with a spiked mace and they dodge it, is it going to go straight into your leg?

You will do only blunt damage with this one so be prepared to bruise each other.  2 points of damage if hit completely (round up to the nearest whole number if dodging creates a fraction), but I will heal all injuries before moving on to the next weapon.  Alright, here I go."

With his hands slightly farther down the shaft than when he held the axe, he still kept his right hand slightly more up than his left hand.  Sig swung the club toward her left forearm, this attack could break bones if swung with full strength, but he wasn't.  He was aiming to numb her arm and make her drop her weapon.

((Changed the Player Dodge Rolls)) - Take these into account when rolling
1-19 = hit completely
20-39 = dodge 1/4 of the damage
40-59 = dodge 1/2 of the damage
60-79 = dodge 3/4 of the damage
80-100 = dodge all of the damage

She was less worried the more they continued sparring about being reprimanded or worse. He's shown a great depth of calm in dealing with taking wounds, since he worked this as a living he must take a lot. Smiling her thanks at his praise, she wondered if she was making decent progress and if weapons fighting might be something she should do more of if she had a need. She returned her Axe to the table and grabbed a Club. Getting into a right foot/right hand slightly forward position she tried to ready herself for his attack.

Tokani saw what he was aiming for a little too late. She tried to block with the shaft of the Club but he managed to rap her on the hand pretty hard, dealing 1 damage, enough to make her wince but not enough to make her drop her weapon. Since she felt that his Club was to her left and it left some of him unprotected, she aimed a backward swing at the right side of his head.

Tokani's Club hits with a thud and a curse from Sig, "D*mn it that stings.  Good job good job... always try to get inside a guard if you see an opening... just let me get these stars from my eyes and we can move on."  He's laughing at himself, she's faster than she seems and she seems to have a natural fighting ability that you don't always see in beginners.  He puts one hand to his head and the other on her hand and heals them both at the same time.  "Can't have you continuing on in less than top form now can we?

Ok, Daggers next, just one, no duel wielding yet.  That can come after you leave here.  Put that Club away and grab one,"
he says as he does the same.  "Daggers are weapons you have to be quick with.  Since you have to be so close to do damage, you must be fast, and having good dodge is a bonus.  You can stab, slash, and hit with the hilt for a blunt damage attack.  And usually, you have one in each hand, blocking with one and attacking with the other, or attacking with both, your choice out in the real world.  Careful of your hands and arms getting cut if the opponent gets past the hilt of your dagger.  These ones are wooden and blunted, so a slash shouldn't cut too much (1 damage), but a stab will still stab (3 damage), so be careful in training where you aim."

Once he sees you are in a comfortably ready position, he jumps at you with a slashing motion aimed to cut you from upper chest on your left side going down and to the right, that should end around the edge of your rib cage on the right side.

*Maybe I should stop aiming for vital spots? I know he's slowing himself down to match me but shouldn't he dodge more of these?* Tokani thought to herself, but she figured it was how he did things so she should try not to be bothered by it.

Grabbing a Dagger, it felt good in her hand. It was more like her homemade weapons when she was younger and needed to make herself claws to match her family in the hunt. Dagger in her left hand, right hand slightly more toward her body so she could try to block she stood ready waiting for his attack.

Only luck and practice dodging her more violent feline family members kept her from taking the hit; Sig was fast. Moving quickly she saw his arm finish the stroke and when it was extended the farthest across his body she slashed at the back of his right arm in an upward/across left to right motion

He saw her attack coming, had in fact left himself open a little bit to see if she would take the bait, and she didn't let him down.  He used his left hand that had been hidden under his right arm to block her slash with a small knock upward, thus making her attack go too far up to do any damage.  "Good job, I like they way you look for openings in your opponents body and pick those places to attack.  Keep it up.  Put the Dagger away and stand over there, next is Hand to Hand.

Hand to Hand isn't for everyone, but everyone should know some basics... your weapon gets smashed or taken from you and what do you have?  Your body.  Boxing is the basic that I will teach you now... for more advanced teaching, you will have to go to a different trainer when you reach a certain level in training.

Keep your feet shoulder width apart, one foot facing your target, the other at a slight 45 degree angle out to help keep your balance.  If they are both facing forward, if someone pushed you from the side, you'd fall over.  Now, a fist is supposed to hit with the first two knuckles on your hand, and never tuck your thumb into your hand... you'll break it.  Keep your feet moving and aim with care, punching solid plate armor will not be nice on your hands.  A kick is usually with the ball of your foot, though the other places like the heel can also be used for specific kicks... like a kick behind you...  Don't kick with your toes or you could break them.

Use your body how you see fit, but some moves may hurt you if you are not skilled enough to use them, so be careful of going above your level... like trying to do throws and joint locks before you learn Aikido... or Judo... or Jujitsu.  You may take more damage from trying something above you than you end up dealing out."

With all that said and having gotten into position, he throws a punch to your stomach with his right hand, stepping forward with his right foot. His left hand retracts slightly, putting up a guard around that side of his jawline.

((59+1=60 putting my dodge at dodging 3/4 of the damage.  Going by 'Your Body - Weapon', a punch is 2 damage, and Sig matching my stats does not give him any additional damage through strength since mine is 7.  Will round the .5pt of damage to 1))

"Thank you," Tokani said to him, please by praise but wondering *Doesn't everyone look for a sweet spot?  Do people really just barge in fighting without looking for weaknesses?  I guess there could be some like that...*  She put her Dagger away and got ready for the next lesson.  Hand to hand was something that she liked, and knew from experience that you don't always have a weapon on you.  His teachings were more in depth and better than what she'd seen of brawls and of her own grappling with animals or overly zealous boys.  She was enjoying this.

Readying for his attack, she saw his muscles tense but couldn't tell where he would aim until it was too late.  She jumped to her left, trying to get out of the way but he still managed to land the punch on her right side (.5 rounded up to 1 damage).  She'd put herself on the opposite side of his guarded hand, hoping he would have a harder time blocking her attack.  She threw a punch with her right hand, aiming for the right side of his face, her left hand going into a position of block much like his own, protecting yet ready to attack if needed.

He tried to pull his punch back in time to block but was unsuccessful.  Tokani's punch landed squarely on his right jaw.  "Good, with this we're finished sparring at least.  Now for Bow and Arrow, and no, not at people.  Follow me to the ranged weapons area."  Sig leads you past other people sparring and training to the outer edge of the training yard where no one will accidently shoot an arrow or throw a knife into someone.  There are targets set up at varying distances.

At the ranged alley there is a table with Bows, Arrows, Crossbows, bolts, and Throwing Knives.  "Grab a Crossbow and a bolt, we will load it here, you will not fire it, this is just to teach you to load and unload it.  Actual Archery will be in a moment.

To load a Crossbow, repeat after me, we wont fire it, but you need to know how to load a bolt.  First you aim it down, placing the tip lightly on the ground.  You will take a bolt and put the butt of it against the string; the tip will not be able to fit yet, just put the butt to the string.  Now brace the Crossbow with your foot and pull back on the string with both hands.  When the head of the bolt can fit in tip, place it inside, it will not release until you pull the trigger.  With a Crossbow, you don't need to stand sideways to fire, but you'll learn more on that on your own time, just don't get your fingers caught in the cord or you may lose them.  Now do all that in reverse to unload it.  Put it down when you are done and make sure you pay attention.

There are many types of Bows but we will be using the standard size to shoot.  But here are some pointers on the Short and Long bows...  a Long Bow must be pulled back farther, and the Short Bow doesn't have quite as long a range.

Now grab a Bow and 5 Arrows and follow me."
He leads you in front of a target shaped like an average sized man that was standing the closest distance away compared to the others in the archery area, but farther than the throwing knives area.

“Ok, Left foot forward, unless you’re a Leftie, stand sideways from the target. Hold the bow in your left hand, thumb aimed toward the target. For now we will pull the string without an arrow…” Too often, he had seen an arrow go wild from beginners. “With three fingers, pull back the center of the string back along your cheekbone, near your temple. Ok, now with an arrow, rest your arrow on top of your thumb and put the end to the string. With one finger above the arrow and two below, pull it back. Do not release yet! Just aim for now… One last thing… the most important thing I can say is… make sure you have a bend in your left arm… if you keep it too straight the arrow will skin your forearm so bad you may never want to pick up a bow again. Release at will, 5 arrows to test your aim.” He instructs you as you fire, how to stand better, how to hold your body better, posture was very important, and above all else, keep that elbow bend slightly…

Tokani was sad to stop sparring, he was a good partner and she was improving quickly under his training. She followed him to the ranged area while trying not to wince when a person sparring was flipped onto the ground hard enough to knock the wind out of him.

They reached the ranged section and she did as she was told, carefully loading the crossbow, watching for her fingers. It was hard to pull it up but it was doable. She unloaded it and put it back, picking up a Bow and 5 arrows as directed. She got into her position, left side forward, and pulled back on the string without an arrow, getting a feel for how hard it was and where to hold her fingers comfortably. Putting an arrow to the string she didn't fire and worked with the aim. She personally thought that the hint about the skinning of your arm should have been stated before students were allowed to put arrow to string, but *I guess if someone didn't listen to him and fired right away they would deserve it and worse* was her main thought.

Having been given permission to fire, she aimed her first arrow at the target and fired, it landed too low on the target, barely making the target at all. Her second arrow was overcompensated and aimed too high, but a little closer to the center. Her third arrow was taken by the wind slightly and blew off the target's left side. The fourth arrow, she'd waited for the wind to die down a little and it was closer to the center, within about 7 inches. Tokani tried to take special care with her last arrow, wanting to hit center at least once; it showed when she got it within an inch of center.

"Now for Throwing Weapons, don't worry about leaving the arrows in the target, they will get picked up later.  Put the Bow back and grab 5 Throwing Knives and follow me."  He leads you a short distance in the ranged area to be in front of a target shaped like an average sized man that was standing the closest distance away compared to the others.  “Lets get started.  Repeat after me: A weapon is not a toy!”  One day he secretly hoped to see one of his trainees would poke an eye out or something, just to know not to play with these weapons, like they usually end up doing.  He didn't think Tokani was like that, she'd shown a respect for her weapons so far.  “Place 3 of the knives on the ground, keep one in each hand.  When you aim, you aim to kill, not to lose your weapon and give it to someone else to use against you!

There are a few different ways to hold it and throw it, holding from the handle or the blade, throwing from overhand or underhand or sideways.  You must also get familiar with throwing while moving at a moving target on your own time, but for now, until you get better, stand still and aim at a still target.

First off, you will learn an overhand throw from the handle.  If you want to throw by the blade, take three paces back or forward and do the same as with the handle, 3 paces is the needed extra space to get the blade to hit properly.

Watch me and do as I say, do not throw until I tell you to.  Opposite foot forward to what hand you will throw with, Left foot for Righties, Right foot for Lefties.  Point your non-throwing hand straight at the target.  Raise your other hand above your head until your elbow is almost directly above your shoulder and your hand is at a comfortable angle behind but above your head, keep it at the center of your body.  Looking at your target, bring your hand forward and release by letting your knife slide out of your fingers until it is completely gone by the time your hands are level together.  Try not to cut your other hand.”
He shows you each step slowly as he speaks.  By the time he is done explaining her merely says “Like this” and throws his knife at the target, hitting it in the center of the head.

"For throwing with the blade, be careful on how you hold the blade to not cut yourself.  With the blade between your thumb and the second knuckle of your pointer finger, you can throw so that when you end your swing your thumb is on top, or sideways so that the back of your hand is up, your pick, whatever feels best.  Your turn, throw all 5 then go retrieve and bring them back to the table.”

She put her Bow back on the table and picked up 5 Throwing Daggers like she was told. Placing 3 on the ground, she repeats after him "A weapon is not a toy." She didn't need to be told this but there were many who did so she didn't feel angry with being told the obvious. Getting into her throwing position and following his lead, she practiced the motion of a 'by the hilt' throw without throwing.

When he said it was okay, she threw her first blade, it landed, buried, into the dirt at the feet of the target, she'd released too late. She adjusted and threw her second blade, this one landed in the target's leg, not that bad, but she was aiming for his chest. She picked up two more from the ground and got back into position. Throwing her third was decent, it landed a little high in the head. Tokani decided to switch it up a little and throw by the blade for her last two, so backing up three paces she got ready and released her blade, being careful of her fingers. It flew well and landed in the chest, slightly to the left. Tokani threw too hard on the last one and it landed low, just above the target's groin, she'd have to remember how hard to throw and compensate.

She picked up her 5 throwing daggers from the target and the ground and returned them to the table.

Sad to see the interesting weapon training end, she says "Thank you so much Mr. Sig, I learned a lot. I'll try to do your training justice."

With that she walked out of the training yard, nervous to be going to a 'Classroom'. Back home with her human family, she'd been forced into school when she was able to talk and understand like a human again... they had not treated her well. Judged her as slow and stupid because of her age and where she was in her learning... didn't matter that she'd learned it all in a fifth of the time that the other children did. Tokani hoped this place would be different, it was training so maybe they'd teach interesting things this time.
